Two Hoots and A Holler

Hoot #1
We have some EGGciting news this week!!  We are hatching chicks again this year, and our eggs have arrived!  The Jitterbugs and Rockstars are the proud parents of 18 eggs.  We have been learning about chickens and oviparous animals.  The students are so excited to see how many eggs will hatch!  They will be observing and keeping an eye on the eggs during our 21 day countdown.  Stay tuned to see our chicks!

Along with learning about chickens, we have been learning about weather.  We read the book Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs.  We thought about what we would want to fall from the sky if we lived in Chewandswallow.  Students wrote about it and created their food cloud.  They LOVE painting with puffy paint.  We mixed shaving cream, glue, and blue paint to finger paint our clouds.  They had a blast!

This Week's Holler...
This week's holler goes out to Rachael at Sweet Sweet Primary.  With science becoming more of a focus in our state, we LOVE her science stations ideas.  We can't wait to use her ideas in our classrooms.  And her ABC countdown to Summer is just TOO PRECIOUS!  What a neat idea!!  Click below to go to her blog to check it all out!!

Two Hoots And A Holler: Kindergarten can get MESSY!

Hoot #1
Last week Jamie posted about her student's Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs writing and craft she did with our weather unit.  My (Jodi) class is a week behind doing this activity.  I found a cute cloud craft on Pinterest that I wanted to do, so I revamped it to incorporate their writing and the book Cloudy With A Chance  of Meatballs.  I made a mixture of shaving cream, glue, and blue paint for them to finger paint their cloud.  While that was drying they did their writing.  The next day they colored, cut, and glued their food on their cloud.  The paint didn't turn out as puffy as I wanted, but they had a blast doing this!  They couldn't wait to read and see what food their classmates chose.  Here are some pictures of the activity...
Students are finger painting their cloud.

These students chose chicken legs and pork chops!

Here is the finished product!

This one says, "I wish it would rain blue bubblegum because it is so good but it is junk food."

This hoot is what Jamie has been waiting to do ALL year!  Her favorite unit on plants and worms!  Today was WORM DAY! She planned a lot of activities for both of our classes to do with worms.  The students got to pick and name their worm, dig dirt for its temporary home, observe their worm, make a worm hat, eat a "worm" snack (with gummy worms, of course!), do a science experiment to make their gummy worm come alive, and finally release their worm back into its habitat.  WHEW!  It was a BUSY day for these kiddos and teachers!! Now, I (Jodi) can't stand to see or touch worms at all!  So, we made a deal that if I did gingerbread houses with her class at Christmas, then she would do worm day with my class.  I am so glad we made that deal because my students got to experience this AWESOME DAY!  So a big shout out to Jamie, Amy (Jamie's assistant), and Amanda (Jodi's assistant) for making this day possible for all of our students!!

Students eating their "wormy" snack while they fill out a web about worms.

She is picking out the perfect worm for her have for the day...this is a HUGE decision for kindergarteners!
These students are observing their worms with a magnifying glass and filling out their observation form.

After picking and observing their worm, they got to write about their worm.

He found a worm in his soil that he put in his cup.  He had to release it back into its habitat before he could add his worm to his cup!

He is watching his worm in his cup cultivate the soil

He is measuring his worm using cubes and recording them on his observation sheet.

Students are releasing worms back into the soil so they can go back to their jobs of helping the soil become rich!
Goodbye worms!  It was a great, fun-filled day!

OH!  I almost forgot!  Students are going to plant seeds in their cup of soil that their worm lived in for the day!

This Week's Holler...
This week's holler goes out to Deanna Jump and DeeDee Wills!  It is hard to holler about one without the other because they have collaborated on so many TPT units together!  When we first ran across their units on TPT, we felt like we had hit the gold mine!  We LOVE the math workshop units, they have been a life saver!   Both of their blogs are FILLED with information and ideas to use in your classroom.  Literally, there is so much information on these two blogs, it would take days to go through it all! Check them out if you haven't already, and be sure to have pen and paper next to you to take notes!  Follow them to be sure you don't miss out! Thank you Deanna and DeeDee for helping out teachers nationwide!

Two Hoots and A Holler: Lovin' Some Spring Weather

Hoot #1
We have been studying all about the weather! You can not do this unit without reading Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs. After this reading, we followed up with this cute activity! Each child decided if it could rain anything, what would they want it to be.
The students wrote what they would like for it to rain.  They also had to tell why they chose for it to rain that particular item.  Of course, they had to draw the item they chose "raining down" from the cloud.

Isaac wishes it would rain chickens because he likes it!
Cristian wishes it would rain hamburgers because he likes hamburgers!

After several reschedules due to the weather, we finally were able to go on our field trip to the park! This is one of my favorite field trips because kids get to be kids! They are able to pretend with each other and role play.  The fact that the weather was beautiful was just icing on the cake!
What at beautiful sight of imaginations at work!

Here is a pic of Kamille being a meterologist.  She was busy predicting the weather. "Today is going to be sunny!" We have been studying the weather for the past two weeks.  This made my heart so happy!
Jevon and Tylor loved pretending to cross the draw bridge!
Abdiel was the knight in the castle!
Cristian and Mason were having so much fun! They decided to take a rest for a minute.
  What a WONDERFUL DAY!!!!

This Week's Holler . . .
This week's holler goes out to new mom, Jena, at Sew Much Music.  Jena is an elementary music teacher who travels among 4 schools.  She incorporates LOTS of technology into her music instruction, and she shares how she does it all on her blog!  She has some great ideas for teachers to incorporate music into their classrooms.  Go check her blog out, and don't forget to share her blog with the music teacher at your school! You will be glad you did!

Two Hoots and A Holler: Marching into Spring

Hoot #1
This post is all about March! We have been having a blast during our "March Madness." Now, "March Madness" may mean something different to you.  To us, this is the time when we realize that we have about 40 days of school left, and we want to make sure that we fit everything in before the last school bell rings for the year! This second wind usually hits us the week that we return from Spring Break. I know that we can't be the only ones that feel that way, right?!?!?!
How cute is this?!?! This is one of our writings that we did in class.  Each child picked someone in their life that was worth more than gold to them.  This child wrote, "Mason because he tells jokes."  One of the reasons I love this age is simply because of their heart. This group truly loves each other.
One of the math activities that we did this week is our butterfly roll. The students roll the die and write the number beside the specified roll. Then they choose a wing to write the different ways to show that number. In this case the child wrote the numeral, number word, drew dots and tally marks. If the students roll a her

Spring has sprung!  We are learning all about weather and spring.  Our kiddos have loved learning all about the different types of weather.  We read Little Cloud by Eric Carle and It Looked Like Spilt Milk by Charles G. Shaw.  After reading these books and some non-fiction texts about clouds, we did some crafts.  We had a great time doing these!  Take a look...

This Week's Holler...
This week's holler goes out to Debbi Watson at the 3rd Grade Pad. We spent a lot of time going through her "Monday Made It" posts.  Oh my!! Debbi is seriously busy and has so many ideas! There are so many ideas to decorate your entire classroom.  There are even more ideas for task cards of every subject and great storage ideas! Be sure to check her out! We have already told all of our 3rd grade friends about her!!
