Two Hoots and A Holler

Hoot #1

This week, we took a trip to the  Children's Museum of Memphis. We haven't been there in about a year. They had made several changes, including adding a carousel.  The carousel was restored from an amusement park that shut down years ago in Memphis, Liberty Land.  Many of the teachers and parents remember riding this very carousel as a child!  The students (and adults) loved it! Some of our students had never ridden one before! It was a marvelous day that gave our children the opportunity to explore and learn through play...just as 5 and 6 year olds should!

February is not complete without a visit from a local pediatric dentist.  Thanks to Happy Smiles in Horn Lake, MS, our students had the opportunity to learn about dental health!  The students loved seeing her brush with the HUGE toothbrush.  They listened so well and even wrote about what they learned in their journals.

This Week's Holler...
This week's holler goes out to Diane at Spreading Joy One Giggle at at Time. She has so many resources! We really enjoyed her article on Smart Beads! We are definitely going to try that in our classrooms. We also love her signs for walking quietly in the hallway. She has a plethora of information on her blog!
Go check her out!

Two Hoots and A Holler

Hoot #1
February is Dental Health month.  We are having a local dentist office visit us tomorrow!  In preparation of the visit, we have been learning, reading, and writing all about teeth.  The students wrote facts about teeth this week, and they used teeth to make a subtraction problem.  They were really excited to talk and write about the Tooth Fairy!

This week we have had many things that have brought a smile to our faces and made these 2 glitter girls very happy!  Happy teachers make happy classrooms!!
We want to share some of these with you!
We have been teaching our kids about adding details to their writing and illustrations!  It has taken a lot of time, but I think they are finally doing it!  In our journals, students are writing multiple sentences on the same topic.  I am so proud of how much they have improved on their writing!

Check out the detail on my shirt!  This was a picture of us on our field trip playing in the "Mississippi River".  My shirt said "Wild About Teaching" so that is the detail she decided to add!  This is such a hard skill for kinders to apply to their writing, so seeing these types of things in their journals puts a BIG smile on our face!

This tablet was on clearance at Wal-Mart for $25!!!!  I was in a hurry, so I did not buy a single one!  I plan on going back this weekend to see if they are still there.  Check your local Wal-Mart for this deal!  You do not want to miss out!!! Deals like this put a smile on our face!

Glitter Spray Paint????  YES!!  PLEASE!!! I saw this at our Local Lowe's Home Improvement store!  I knew I had to find a way to use this when I saw it!  If you have any idea on what to use glitter spray paint, then let me know!  I gotta have it!!

One of my students wore this shirt this week....that pretty much sums up my feelings on glitter spray paint, glitter, glitter paper, glitter ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING!!
Things with bling are our favorite things!

This Week's Holler...
This week's holler goes out to Hadar at Miss Kindergarten! We love her "Little Sight Word Book."  This would be great for those students that are having a hard time tackling those sight words. We also loved reading about her Read/Write and reveal! You should hop over there and see what it is all about!

Two Hoots and A Holler: Field Trips and Visitors

Hoot #1
Last week we had a field trip to the Children's Museum of MemphisThis field trip is a favorite among kids.  The museum has so many different things they can interact with, and they get to be a KID!
There is an actual Fed Ex airplane inside for the kids to explore!  Students loved sitting in the cockpit and pretending to be a pilot!

The students also love to take on roles that they see adults do everyday! Through play, they are able to experience what it might feel like to have certain occupations. Above, you see Issac.  He was working on this car as a mechanic.  He was filling the car with gas before his customer, Madysen (you see popping her head out of the car), left.
Cristian and Mason talk about becoming police officers a lot!! So, I was not surprised to see them here! However, I was surprised to hear Mason say, "Pull over Mrs. Jamie. You are under arrest!"
This pic just makes my heart smile.  Daija is pretending to be a chef. She is READING the recipe and pretending to mix the ingredients.  WOOOOHOOO!!!

And who doesn't like adventure?!?! Brylee took the time to do a little rock climbing! She made it to the top all by herself! You go girl!!
Look at that face! The wonder and amazement is so precious!
Our students experienced so many things in their short time here.  They got to grocery shop, go to the bank, pretend to be a star in Hollywood and perform on stage, play in the Mississippi River, be a dentist, and so much more!  If you are ever in the Memphis area, be sure to go check it out!

For Dental Health month, a dentist came to talk to all of our kindergarten classes about dental hygiene.  I was amazed at the questions that they had for them.  We can check question asking off on the report card!

Of course they loved singing the song about brushing their teeth!
The students got to choose what foods were healthy/not healthy for their teeth.  Yarel is choosing that cookies are not good for your teeth.  Some of the students disagreed with her.  One students said, "They may be bad for my teeth but they are yummy in my belly."

The students were able to put on some of the items that dentists wear.  Cristian got to wear the face mask.  He was so proud!
Of course, it wouldn't be right to have a visit from the dentist and not have our own teeth cleaned.  Check out those pearly whites on Jodi! It took some muscle work, but boy are they shiny now!!

This Week's Holler...
This week's holler goes out to Heather at Smack Dab in the Middle. She is an Indiana middle school teacher. We met Heather at the French Lick Teacher Blogger Meet-up last year.  She was so friendly and helped make us feel right at home.  She has a ton of helpful ideas so hop on over to her blog and check them out.
